Transformation at Hollywood Burbank Airport

Hollywood Burbank Airport, the second-busiest airport after LAX, is undergoing significant changes. On October 13, a new terminal will replace its two existing terminals. This $1.3-billion project aims to streamline operations with a 355,000-square-foot single terminal, which will be 50% larger than the current layout while maintaining 14 gates.

Enhanced Passenger Experience

The new terminal promises improved technology, more space, and adherence to safety standards. Hollywood Burbank Airport, established in 1930 and managed by the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, is favored for its convenience compared to Los Angeles International Airport. However, its location in the San Fernando Valley has occasionally led to conflicts with nearby residents.

Addressing Safety and Compliance

The current Burbank facility does not meet state seismic standards or FAA design standards, resulting in repeated safety warnings. The airport services approximately 6.2 million passengers annually with flights to 30 nonstop destinations. The new design will increase the distance between the terminal and the nearest runway from 257 feet to 880 feet, ensuring compliance with FAA requirements.

Delays at LAX

Meanwhile, at LAX, a long-awaited SkyLink automated people mover faces delays. Technical and legal issues have postponed its opening. LAX representatives state that thorough testing is in progress to guarantee safety and reliability.

Voter-Approved Project

Burbank voters approved the terminal replacement project in 2016, with construction commencing in 2024. The new terminal will feature sculptures “The Two Electras” by Cliff Garten at the entrance and artwork by Glenn Kaino inside. Although the entrance shifts to Winona Avenue and Hollywood Way, the airport’s operations, including flight numbers and hours, remain unchanged.

Enhanced Facilities

The new terminal reduces the distance from entrance to farthest gate from 1,600 feet to 1,285 feet, with wider corridors and accessible power outlets. Baggage claims will move indoors, improving comfort and convenience.

Project Oversight

Known as Elevate BUR, the project is managed by Jacobs, with Design-Build efforts from Holder, Pankow, TEC, Joint Venture. Architectural services are provided by Corgan and CannonDesign.

Shuttle Services and Tarmac Boarding

Shuttle bus service will continue between the new terminal and Burbank Airport-South Train Station and Burbank Airport-North Station. Passengers will still walk across the tarmac to board planes, a feature appreciated by many travelers.
