Understanding the Dynamics of Tipping: Insights from Mel Robbins and Experts

4 weeks ago 0

Mel Robbins, a well-known author and podcast host, shared a unique insight about earning substantial tips during her time as a waitress. The key, she learned, lies in focusing on the women at the table. Robbins recounted advice from a mentor at the Red Rooster Tavern in Michigan, who shared a secret for securing good tips: recognize who truly influences the gratuity.

Robbins explained to The Wall Street Journal that many assume the person who pays the bill decides the tip. However, her mentor taught her otherwise. Women often influence the tipping decision, suggesting they play a role by telling their partners, “She was great. Give her a good tip.” This led Robbins to prioritize excellent service for the women at the table.

While Robbins believes in the influence women have over tipping, hospitality and etiquette experts advise a more balanced approach. Robert Mahon, managing partner of Mahon Hospitality Group, concurred with Robbins’ perspective partially, acknowledging women’s influence. Yet, he emphasized the importance of treating all guests equally to avoid poor hospitality.

“The best servers read the whole table,” Mahon stated. “Regardless of gender, people respond positively to friendly and engaging service.”

A broader look into the psychology of tipping reveals more than just good service at play. Research by John S. Seiter and Harry Weger Jr. explored how compliments can impact gratuities. Their study, published in 2010, involved 360 dining parties. Some servers complimented guests on their food choices, while others did not. Results showed significantly higher tips for those who received compliments, demonstrating the power of positive interactions.

Lisa Burdette, founder of the Dallas School of Etiquette, also acknowledged women’s influence on tipping decisions. Yet, she maintained that service professionals should focus equally on all patrons. According to Burdette, etiquette dictates that the individual responsible for the bill ultimately decides the tip amount. She stressed that the topic should not spark debate at the table.

In summary, while social dynamics can affect tipping behaviors, exceptional service necessitates attention to all guests. Understanding these nuances can enhance a server’s ability to connect positively with diners, potentially increasing their tips.
