Ukrainian President Visits UK Amid Tensions with Russia

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham at a naval base in England. Burnham emphasized the visit signals the UK’s strong support for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s visit is significant as the first by a foreign leader since Burnham assumed office a week ago. Former Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Kyiv just recently as part of his final duties before leaving office.

Burnham is the fifth British Prime Minister to work with Zelenskyy since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Burnham, who previously served as the mayor of Greater Manchester, has limited foreign policy experience. He declared, “Russia should be in no doubt of our resolve, and we will not back down until we achieve long-lasting and just peace for Ukraine.”

During the visit, Zelenskyy and Burnham will meet with over 200 Ukrainian military personnel who have been conducting military exercises in the UK. These exercises focus on enhancing war-fighting capabilities and countermine activities in the Black Sea.

The UK government announced it would provide Ukraine with the intellectual property of its “Stone Cloak” electronic warfare system, which prevents drones from being detected.

Ukraine has intensified its strike campaign with frequent drone attacks inside Russia. These strikes have targeted oil facilities, military installations, and logistical centers. Such actions have challenged Russia’s narrative that the conflict does not affect its citizens.

Russia continues its aerial campaign, frequently bombarding Ukraine with missiles and drones. Recently, a fire broke out at a shopping complex in Zaporizhzhia after Russian strikes.

Russia again attacked Ukraine overnight with 147 long-range strike drones, according to the Ukrainian air force, which said 123 drones were intercepted or jammed.

In Zaporizhzhia, one person was killed, and two were injured during a series of attacks that damaged residential buildings, as reported by regional administration head Ivan Fedorov. In the Nikopol district, Russian strikes injured a woman and a boy, causing damage to a kindergarten and other buildings.

Moscow’s Defense Ministry reported downing 276 Ukrainian drones overnight. Meanwhile, Russia’s Rostov region governor noted casualties from a Ukrainian drone attack in Rostov-on-Don. In Belgorod, a separate drone attack injured 12 individuals.

Iran reported an attack on its vessel in the Caspian Sea, allegedly linked to Ukraine, resulting in a sailor’s death. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the attack, calling it a violation of the U.N. Charter, and indicated it was influenced by external forces. He contacted EU and Russian officials to express his concerns.

Zelenskyy described recent Ukrainian strikes in the Caspian Sea as successful, targeting vessels tied to Iranian military cargo and a warship.
