Strategic Gains in Donetsk Region

Ukrainian forces achieved a tactical advantage in their counteroffensive around Donetsk by cleverly misleading Russia’s military leadership. Kyiv maintained silence on its gains, only acknowledging progress in the region north of Lyman this week. Major Maksym Zhorin from Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps affirmed that Operation Vivaldi disrupted Russia’s effort to encircle the ‘Fortress Belt,’ a key defensive network in the eastern Donbas region.

The Fortress Belt’s Importance

The Fortress Belt consists of fortified cities and defensive strongholds, vital for safeguarding Donbas. This area is crucial to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s objectives, as capturing the entire region remains a primary goal. According to military analyst Giorgi Revishvili, maintaining operational security is essential, particularly at this stage of the conflict dominated by intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and extensive drone use.

Operation Vivaldi’s Accomplishments

Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi, leading Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps, highlighted that Russian plans aimed for pincer movements to merge at Barvinkove, Kharkiv, to capture Donetsk fully. Ukrainian forces thwarted this by defeating encirclement plans both north through Lyman and Sviatohirsk, and south via Dobropillya. The element of surprise, enhanced by strict security and counter-drone tactics, played a significant role in impeding Russian operational awareness.

Secrecy of Ukrainian Advances

Ukraine’s strategy involved a protective drone system, integrated with electronic warfare, neutralizing approximately 20,000 Russian drones. During the Oleksandrivka counteroffensive, operational surprise included tasks at secure distances to mask real troop positions. Limiting public discussions about specific operations contributed to Russian forces receiving incomplete or misleading battlefield information.

Revishvili noted that Russian forces often misinform their superiors to secure favorable treatment and avoid repercussions when facing operational challenges.

Enhancing Drone Capabilities

The Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps effectively hindered Russian fuel sources and drone tactics during strikes in Luhansk. This gave Ukrainian forces an edge, enabling mechanized progress toward Lyman. Revishvili commended Ukraine’s comprehensive plans, focusing on neutralizing enemy firing positions and unmanned systems.

While both Ukrainian and Russian forces test mechanized maneuver strategies to overcome positional warfare, Ukrainians have shown more success, showcasing the viability of maneuver warfare even with the high presence of drones. The Institute for the Study of War reported ongoing trials of such tactics by both sides.
