U.S.S. Nimitz in Southern Caribbean Amid Tensions

1 month ago 0

The U.S.S. Nimitz aircraft carrier, accompanied by escort warships, arrived in the southern Caribbean Sea on Wednesday. This move is part of the Trump administration’s strategy to pressure the Cuban government. The entry coincided with the Justice Department’s announcement of charges against Raul Castro, the former president of Cuba.

The arrival of the Nimitz, with its fighter jets, serves primarily as a demonstration of force. It is not intended for major military operations like those executed by the Gerald Ford carrier during the raid to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January. This information came from a U.S. official who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of operational details.

The Nimitz’s deployment along the South American coast has included exercises with the Brazilian navy. Although its presence in the Caribbean seems aligned with the charging of Raul Castro, any connection remains unconfirmed.

The Southern Command welcomed the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group with a social media announcement, highlighting the carrier’s global combat capabilities. The statement emphasized its role in maintaining stability and defending democracy worldwide.

Following the Maduro raid, much of the American military presence in the Caribbean moved to participate in the Iran War. However, the amphibious assault ship Tripoli still operates in the region.

Eric Schmitt, a national security correspondent for The Times, has reported extensively on U.S. military affairs and counterterrorism.
