1 hour ago 0

The State Department is closely observing reports of a potential fatal pneumonic plague case in Russia. Moscow is urged to promptly share precise information as details remain uncertain.

A State Department official informed Fox News of awareness regarding reports of a death in Irkutsk Oblast, a region in southeastern Siberia. The Department, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other agencies, is carefully monitoring the situation. Emphasis was placed on the call for Russian authorities to disclose their knowledge, as numerous details remain unverified.

Former CIA officer Dan Hoffman shared insights with Fox News Digital, suggesting that the U.S. intelligence community is likely gathering comprehensive intelligence on the event.

“Our embassy in Moscow is likely interacting with their diplomatic counterparts officially because there may be individuals in Russia at risk,” Hoffman stated.

The U.S. consistently communicates with its allies to share known information.

Plague bacteria, known as Yersinia pestis, causes bubonic plague and is commonly carried by rat pathogens. This disease still has occurrences in various regions worldwide. Pneumonic plague responds to common antibiotics, particularly when treatment starts early. Therapy should commence promptly when plague is suspected, with intravenous or oral antimicrobials administered based on illness severity and other factors, as stated by the CDC.

The State Department official reiterated that cases of pneumonic plague naturally occur globally. U.S. citizens’ safety and security remain the top priority. Americans traveling internationally are advised to register in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates.
