After the attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, Israel faced a vulnerable moment. Its leaders, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, aimed for a level of success defined as invincibility. Netanyahu spoke of ‘total victory’ and initiated a widespread military campaign impacting Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and Iran.
The administration adopted unrestricted warfare as its main agenda. Pro-Israel support has equated to backing this strategy, or at least not questioning it. The noticeable shift in U.S.-Israel relations has surprised many Israelis, partly due to comments from the Trump administration.
President Trump reportedly criticized Netanyahu privately, calling him ‘crazy’ and implying that his actions had made Israel unloved internationally. Vice President JD Vance has publicly challenged Israel’s approach, urging a more diplomatic stance.
While Netanyahu refrains from expressing his dissatisfaction publicly, Israeli media voices have been outspoken. Far-right commentator Yinon Magal derogated Vance and mischaracterized Trump’s envoys. Remarks from Netanyahu’s allies convey shock over Trump’s diplomatic maneuverings with Iran.
Recent polls indicate a significant drop in Trump’s popularity among Israelis following the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding. Despite not being a complete severance, the U.S.-Israeli alliance is at a decisive point.
Israel’s significant influence in U.S. politics, longstanding military and economic prominence in the region, and the pro-Israel lobby’s success are all facing uncertainty. Israel placed significant stakes in the conflict with Iran but has not achieved its desired outcome.
Vance’s comments exemplify the rift. In an interaction with Times Opinion columnist Ross Douthat, Vance advised against believing in military solutions for every national security issue. He similarly warned during a White House briefing about the risks of alienating the U.S., Israel’s sole remaining substantial ally.
