Tyquan Thornton’s Gruesome Ankle Injury in Chiefs vs. Raiders Game

55 minutes ago 0

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton experienced a shocking ankle injury during Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Surprisingly, he initially didn’t notice the severity of his condition.

During the fourth quarter at Allegiant Stadium, Kansas City trailed 19-17, facing a third-and-4 situation with 3:25 left. Patrick Mahomes threw a deep pass down the left sideline. Thornton managed to catch the ball for a 55-yard gain. However, Raiders safety Treydan Stukes tackled him from behind, landing across Thornton’s left ankle.

Thornton secured the football and seemed prepared to celebrate a significant game play. As he tried to stand, he realized his left foot was in an unnatural position. This moment was graphic and not recommended for viewers with a weak stomach.

CBS announcers Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt immediately reacted to the replay with shock. “Oh, no,” reacted Watt. “Oh my goodness. I don’t even want to look at it,” added Nantz. These responses were fitting as photos captured the aftermath of Thornton’s injury.

Medical staff swiftly placed Thornton’s left leg in an air cast and took him off the field. The Chiefs identified the incident as an ankle injury but hadn’t provided further details when this report was finalized.

This setback was particularly unfortunate for Thornton, who had recently established himself in Kansas City. Drafted by the Patriots in 2022, Thornton joined the Chiefs’ practice squad in November 2024. By 2025, he made the regular roster and re-signed in March, following a season with 19 receptions for 438 yards and three touchdowns.

Before the injury, Thornton showed superb form, totaling 108 receiving yards in the two prior games. Sunday’s performance marked his first 100-yard game, recording five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

The Chiefs faced additional challenges, having lost Rashee Rice to a right hamstring injury in the first quarter. Rice, who had 190 receiving yards in three games, did not return, placing pressure on Kansas City’s receiving options.

Thornton’s 55-yard catch led to Kenneth Walker’s crucial touchdown on the subsequent play, aiding Kansas City to a 30-27 victory and a 4-0 season start. Hopefully, Thornton’s injury might be less severe than it seemed, despite appearing very grave.
