President Trump arrived in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to support Sen. Darline Graham, among other prominent events surrounding the unconventional midterm convention in Dallas. The unconventional convention, dubbed a “Trumpapalooza,” has stirred interest among political circles. This two-night event differs from the typical presidential nominating conventions held every four years, as this is not a presidential election year.

Republicans face the challenge of holding onto their narrow majorities in Congress. Trump’s strategy focuses on energizing the Republican base, particularly in swing states and competitive districts. His plea at the South Carolina rally urged voters to act as though he is on the ballot and emphasized the significance of voting in the midterms.

This approach contrasts with the typical strategy seen during midterms. Most presidents distance themselves when facing political obstacles. For instance, Biden humorously offered to campaign for or against a senator, whichever was more beneficial.

Recent polling indicates that Democrats are more energized for the midterms than Republicans. Nevertheless, Trump continues defying conventional political tactics. A Trump-aligned political group, Securing American Greatness, recently aired campaign ads focused on Trump’s image rather than specific Republican candidates.

The Dallas convention aims to spotlight key issues influencing the midterms, such as affordability and border security. Notable speakers include Trump, Vice President Vance, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Despite the prominence of these figures, less than half of Republicans in competitive races are listed as speakers, according to an NPR analysis.

Rep. Zach Nunn of Iowa, in a toss-up race, opted to focus on district efforts instead of attending the convention. Meanwhile, Vice President Vance expressed confidence in reaching national audiences without congressional members present.

The convention’s timing coincides with the NFL season opener, creating competition for viewers. Democrats are not hosting a similar event, resulting in limited counterprogramming.

Despite waning popularity of conventions, Ohio Republican Party chairman Alex Triantafilou reported significant interest in attendance, stimulated by efforts to rally support and fundraise for the party. He noted Trump’s popularity in Ohio and the focus on mobilizing low-propensity voters.

As Republicans face a challenging political environment, the novel midterms approach might be their strategy to minimize losses. Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project, voiced optimism about this unusual tactic and emphasized the importance of defending Trump’s record as a potentially successful strategy.
