Trump’s Proposed Triumphal Arch in Washington, D.C.

This grand structure aims to function as a ‘military complex’ featuring military sniper areas and a substantial stockpile of weaponry.

According to Trump’s post on Truth Social, this military aspect is essential for national security. He stated, “At the strong request of the United States Military, and for National Security purposes, I have agreed to convert the magnificent Triumphal Arch into a top-grade Military Complex.” The arch, located near the National Mall, is designed to accommodate drones and house snipers on rooftops and plaza areas. Additionally, it would store large quantities of sniper ammunition.

The construction plan for the arch, intended to stand between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial, has encountered opposition. At 250 feet, it is twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial. Over 100,000 comments were submitted to the National Park Service during their review of the proposal. Legal challenges have also arisen. U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkin mandated a 48-hour notice before any activity on Memorial Circle, warning of violations if construction or demolition occurs without final authorization from the NPS.

A lawsuit was filed by Vietnam War veterans and an architectural historian claiming the arch would desecrate Arlington National Cemetery’s grounds and arguing that the president lacks the authority to construct it without Congressional approval. This order followed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s announcement on X that the administration intended to break ground within two weeks, despite pending approvals from the National Capital Planning Commission and other federal reviews.

Trump expressed on Truth Social, “There will be no facility like this anywhere in the World. Out of the 59 top cities and Capitals, Washington, D.C., is the only one in the world that does not have a triumphal arch, but it will now, and it will be the greatest of them all.”
