President Donald Trump faced scrutiny from lawmakers during a review of the Sports Broadcasting Act on Wednesday. Representatives criticized the National Football League for restricting game broadcasts to streaming services, seeing it as a burden for fans who must pay up to $1,000 to watch their teams. Amid these discussions, a Democratic representative targeted Trump after his attendance at the NBA Finals Game 3.
Trump made history as the first sitting president to attend the NBA Finals, watching his home team, the New York Knicks, compete against the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden on June 8, 2026. The Knicks won the initial two games in San Antonio but lost at home on Monday.
During a hearing focused on NFL streaming costs, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., linked Trump to the Knicks’ loss. “We cannot discuss sports today without mentioning the Knicks’ pursuit of an NBA championship,” Nadler said. “Tonight is Game 4, and as long as Donald Trump stays away from Madison Square Garden, the Knicks should do fine. Let’s go Knicks.”
Trump had received a mixed reaction at Madison Square Garden, contrasting with his Florida appearance at the college football national championship. His presence in New York heightened security measures citywide. Officials erected a security fence around MSG, with the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies ensuring thorough safety procedures. This led to longer entry lines and waiting times for arena attendees.
The heightened security also caused the cancellation of local watch parties, according to the NYPD, due to Trump’s visit. They are expected to resume for Game 4 on Wednesday.
President Trump has attended various sports events during his second term, such as the Super Bowl in New Orleans two seasons ago, the Daytona 500, the college football national championship, the men’s tennis U.S. Open, and the Ryder Cup.
