Tragic Incident in Minnesota: Family Killed at Home Daycare

In Hopkins, Minnesota, a man killed his wife and their 7-year-old daughter at their in-home daycare before taking his own life. This occurred while young children were present, according to local police. The man, 41, also allegedly killed a 78-year-old relative prior to this event at her home.

Police stated that the man shot himself after fatally injuring his family at Brown Bear Childcare, a facility run by the family. Despite the tragic incident, all other children at the daycare were unharmed. A parent notified authorities after witnessing the assault in the basement during a child’s drop-off.

“There’s no worse scenario than this, where you drop off your child somewhere you think is safe, and you get that phone call,” Hopkins Police Chief Brent Johnson remarked at a news conference.

Hours following the events in Hopkins, Burnsville officers found a woman fatally stabbed at a home linked to the suspect. The Burnsville location, about 20 miles away, ties into the broader investigation. Despite the lack of publicized motives or previous police calls to the Hopkins site, investigators connect the two tragic occurrences.

A local nurse, Amanda Marx, recounted the sudden police activity as officers broke down the home’s front door. Witness to the aftermath, she described seeing officers carrying a child as crime scene tape was placed around the premises. The daycare, adorned with a mural, appeared on social media as a lively environment for kids.

The daycare, known for its mural, has been a licensed institution since 2019. Inspections in recent years showed compliance with state regulations. Long-time neighbor Marx expressed her shock, stating that she had not known the daycare operated there.

Chief Johnson noted the rarity of such violent incidents in Hopkins, expressing the impact it left on officers at the scene. The intense nature of the event will likely remain in their memories for years to come.
