A tight-knit group of friends often gathered at a familiar corner on the Upper West Side to relax and catch up. Sadly, their usual meeting spot turned tragic one night when a speeding S.U.V. drove into a crowd, resulting in the deaths of two people.
On Friday, May 15, Michael Saint-Hilaire and Jason Negron spent the evening at their usual spot, laughing, joking, and enjoying cold cans of Coca-Cola with their friends. The mild weather, with temperatures in the mid-60s, convinced them to stay out longer. Mr. Saint-Hilaire sat on his parked motorcycle while Mr. Negron stood nearby, still dressed in his work uniform. More friends continued to join them as the night progressed.
The block near 109th Street and Amsterdam Avenue was familiar to both Mr. Saint-Hilaire and Mr. Negron. It was a place where Columbia University students mingled with local residents, including elderly men chatting in Spanish under the shade of trees.
As bars filled up that evening, the expanding group of friends spotted an old acquaintance across the street. Mr. Saint-Hilaire, 35, and Mr. Negron, 46, walked over to meet this person at the cement median, situated between bike lanes and traffic lanes, near a small garden adorned with purple and red flowers. It was close to 6 p.m.
At the same time, Elvin Suarez, 61, was reportedly driving a black Mercedes-Benz S.U.V. at high speed toward his home on the Upper West Side. Police stated that Mr. Suarez’s vehicle touched the passenger side of a white S.U.V., after which he appeared to accelerate further.
Jason Negron had recently taken his wife out for a birthday dinner just two days before the tragic accident, according to a friend. Michael Saint-Hilaire frequently visited friends in the neighborhood where he grew up, often crossing Central Park to do so.
This corner, which held countless shared memories for the group of friends, is now a place of somber remembrance for two lives lost too soon.
