An 18-year-old student lost their life and three others were injured in a shooting during a high school graduation event in Northern California. This tragic incident occurred on Wednesday evening at Sem Yeto High School’s graduation ceremony, held at Fairfield High School.
According to Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea, the victims included an 11-year-old child, along with individuals aged 20 and 25. The 18-year-old student succumbed to the injuries sustained during the shooting.
The surviving victims are currently receiving medical treatment, and investigations are ongoing. Officer Belyea stated, “We don’t have any information that there’s any ongoing threat to the community at this time.” The police have yet to release information regarding a suspect, with further updates anticipated later this week.
Sem Yeto High School, part of the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District, faced chaos during what was supposed to be a celebratory occasion. Witnesses recall a scene of panic as a man began shooting where graduates had gathered to take photos. The crowd dispersed as fear spread quickly amongst the attendees.
Speaking on this tragedy, Fairfield Mayor Catherine Moy urged residents to rely on official updates from the Fairfield Police Department. Expressing her sorrow, Moy shared, “My heart is breaking for the students and families involved. I graduated from Fairfield High School and I can’t get my head and heart around this tragedy. I’m shaken to my soul.” Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the lasting impact on the students, families, and the broader Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District community.
