Tony Romo’s position with CBS remains uncertain after his recent arrest for operating while intoxicated (OWI). The president of CBS Sports, David Berson, addressed the situation at the ‘NFL on CBS’ Media Day.
Berson confirmed that Romo is on indefinite leave but clarified that decisions regarding his status have not been finalized. ‘It’s an evolving situation and we are still assessing,’ Berson said, noting the absence of a clear timetable.
Romo’s legal troubles arose from his arrest by Milwaukee County deputies, after showing signs of impairment while driving back from a golf event. Berson emphasized the importance of CBS’s image and brand, stating, ‘We have to consider the impact on our image and our brand.’ He added, ‘The focus should be and needs to be on our presentation and this great product.’
The former NFL quarterback faces charges related to impaired driving, possession of an open bottle of alcohol, and unsafe passing. Despite the uncertainty, CBS is prepared to move forward with a strong lineup. J.J. Watt has been announced as CBS Sports’ top analyst, joining Jim Nantz for gameday coverage by 2026.
Romo is under a 10-year contract worth $180 million. The deal, signed in 2020, leaves him with $72 million still owed. Nonetheless, doubts regarding his future with the network existed even before his arrest. There is also speculation about CBS potentially invoking a morals clause within Romo’s contract due to the arrest.
His court hearing is scheduled for September 21, eight days after CBS Sports airs its first NFL game of the season.
