David Sacks, a prominent adviser to President Trump on technology, recently shared his views with CBS News regarding artificial intelligence (AI) development. He suggested that fears about AI’s threat to humanity are exaggerated and stated that development should continue with caution. “I think this is becoming a panic,” Sacks told Jo Ling Kent, CBS News senior business and technology correspondent. He emphasized the need for a rational approach, especially during an election season where fears can be politically amplified.

Sacks’ remarks addressed growing concerns that advanced AI platforms could pose significant risks to society. On September 8, Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic researcher, warned that companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are taking a gamble by developing self-improving AI technologies, such as superintelligence, which may exceed human capabilities in cognitive tasks.

In response, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei remarked on the “real dangers” associated with AI and indicated the industry has misled the public by downplaying technological risks. Sacks challenged AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, insisting they bear responsibility for ensuring the safety of their creations. “First and foremost, it is on them to make their products safe,” he said, urging developers to either solve the problem or step aside for those who can.

According to Sacks, depending on government intervention to safeguard against AI misuse is not advisable. He stressed, “If you can’t control it, then don’t do it,” referring to Amodei’s comments. Sacks believes the risks of AI can be managed effectively and supports continuing development under safe conditions.

Sacks, a venture capitalist with investments in major tech firms like Airbnb, SpaceX, and Facebook, emphasized avoiding regulatory pauses that might hinder U.S. competitiveness against China, which is advancing quickly in AI technology. He asserted, “If we just pause all development, they will race ahead.” President Trump recently dismissed suggestions for stricter regulations, arguing the sector is adequately monitored.
