Thailand has announced plans to reduce the duration of visa-free stays for tourists from numerous countries, including the United States. The Thai government plans to decrease the maximum visa-free stay from 60 to 30 days. This policy update impacts citizens from a total of 54 nations.
The adjustment comes after Thailand had previously relaxed its entry requirements in 2024 to boost tourism following the pandemic. In 2025, around 33 million tourists visited Thailand, according to the Bank of Thailand. This is a noticeable decline from nearly 40 million tourists in 2019.
The revised visa policy affects travelers from countries such as Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and others. Although the Thai Embassy in Washington has confirmed the change, it has not provided specific reasons for the decision. The Bangkok Post cited concerns regarding unauthorized businesses and crime by foreigners as potential factors in the decision.
The policy will be enacted 15 days after its publication in The Royal Gazette, Thailand’s official government journal. It is currently unclear when this notice will be published.
Those currently in Thailand under the existing visa rules will not be affected and may stay until their permitted period expires. For countries not included in the new 30-day visa-free program, travelers will face diverse regulations. These include a 15-day visa exemption for specific Indian Ocean island countries and visa-on-arrival options for citizens of four other countries, including India.
Travelers needing visas can apply through Thailand’s online visa platform.
