FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Newly released video footage offers a glimpse into the moments following a tragic incident at a Texas high school track meet. A teenage athlete fatally stabbed a peer from a rival team in the stadium bleachers. The footage, sourced from an officer’s body camera and a surveillance camera, was made available after the trial’s conclusion.
Karmelo Anthony, 19, was convicted on June 10 of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. Anthony received a sentence of 35 years in prison, with the jury dismissing his claims of self-defense.
The surveillance footage reveals a track and its bleachers on a rainy day. It captures a figure in a gray sweatshirt suddenly appearing from behind a yellow tent. This person then runs down the bleacher steps. The video doesn’t include sound. After reaching the bottom, the figure trips, falls, but continues running along the fencing, separating the bleachers from the track. He pauses briefly, turns to see if someone is pursuing him, and continues running. Eventually, he connects with an unidentified individual, where they exchange words and embrace.
As they resume walking, another person joins them. Following further conversation, Anthony proceeds to the fence, where he seemingly encounters a police officer. The officer places him in handcuffs and leads him to a police cruiser. Anthony complies with the instructions before breaking into tears.
“He put his hands on me,” Anthony expressed, his voice filled with emotion. “I told him not to. He put his hands on me.”
The officers then escort Anthony to the police cruiser and secure him inside.
