Texas Senate Candidate James Talarico Adjusts Border Security Stance

1 day ago 0

Texas Senate candidate James Talarico has shifted his stance on border security, presenting a more moderate position in his recent campaign advertisement. In the ad, he criticized former President Joe Biden for inadequate handling of border security issues.

Previously, Talarico advocated for reallocating Texas’ $800 million biennial border security budget to public education. This stance emerged from a 2019 interview where he expressed his desire to increase educational funding by redirecting resources from border security.

I’d rather take that money and put it back into public education and help increase the basic allotment, for instance, Talarico stated in the interview.

As he campaigns for a Senate seat, Talarico faces challenges in Texas, a state known for its conservative views. His effort to appear more moderate comes amid accusations of being overly progressive. He acknowledged the problem of illegal immigration, emphasizing the cost and inefficiency of the current border strategy which involves expensive deployments of resources.

During his previous tenure in the Texas legislature, Talarico attracted attention for his progressive views, notably his criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which he deemed unnecessary. He also referred to undocumented immigrants as constituents and criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s border security measures.

Currently, Talarico describes himself as a border security Democrat, proposing a balanced border security agenda. This includes calls for an increase in border patrol agents and enforcement against violent criminals and traffickers, but not against families or individuals not posing a threat.

Recently, Talarico’s campaign clarified his stance, highlighting his support for bipartisan initiatives endorsed by both Republican and Democratic sheriffs in border counties. The campaign’s spokesperson, JT Ennis, stated Talarico’s commitment to stronger border policies while being mindful of humanitarian aspects.

This Senate race in Texas remains highly competitive as Talarico faces off against Republican Ken Paxton. As the November midterms approach, the candidates continue to address key issues impacting voters in the state.
