Tensions Escalate Between Giorgia Meloni and Donald Trump

5 days ago 0

Giorgia Meloni swiftly rejected President Donald Trump’s claim that she had “begged” him for a photo at the Group of Seven (G7) summit. The Italian prime minister declared the statement “totally fabricated,” showing clear irritation at Trump’s assertion.

The conflict began when Trump informed Italian broadcaster La7 that Meloni had pleaded with him for a photo during the summit in Evian-les-Bains, France. Trump claimed, “She begged me to take a photo with her. She wanted a photo with me so badly – I could have skipped it, but I felt sorry for her.” This remark was shared in a brief interview now available on the channel’s website.

Meloni expressed being “stunned” by Trump’s remarks. She criticized his broader approach to international relations, suggesting he disrespects long-standing Western allies. “I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves this way with his own allies,” Meloni noted. “It’s not the first time this has happened.” Her comment seemed to reference a previous interview, where Trump criticized Meloni’s stance on the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani sharply reacted by labeling Trump’s comments as “serious” and “offensive” to Italy, also canceling a planned U.S. trip. Footage from the G7 showed Meloni and Trump in a lengthy conversation on a small sofa. Trump portrayed this as a favor he granted Meloni, saying, “She’s probably happy I talked to her. I didn’t have to talk to her.”

Only a dubbed version of the interview is available, as the original audio was not released. Another video from the summit depicted Meloni speaking animatedly while Trump appeared largely unresponsive.

Once considered one of Trump’s closest political allies in Europe, Meloni attended his inauguration in January 2025, the sole European leader present. Trump had previously praised Meloni, whose Brothers of Italy party saw electoral success in line with broader nationalist movements in Europe.

Recent disputes reveal a significant decline in their relationship. Earlier this year, Meloni criticized Trump for his remarks about Pope Leo XIV’s stance on the Iran war. Trump retaliated by questioning Meloni’s courage, highlighting strains in what was once seen as a strong political partnership.
