Susie Wiles, Chief of Staff at the White House, has shared her experience of battling breast cancer while managing one of the most challenging jobs in Washington. Her op-ed in USA Today reveals the struggles of undergoing chemotherapy while leading the White House staff during Donald Trump’s presidency.
“Fighting cancer is brutal and unrelenting,” Wiles stated. She described how thoughts about treatment and what might come next often overwhelmed her.

On difficult days, finding the strength to get out of bed and go to work was a significant challenge for Wiles. She stressed that having a work commitment beyond medical appointments helped her maintain a sense of purpose.
Colleagues from within and outside the White House, along with her family, friends, and medical team, supported her throughout the illness.
“Cancer can make your world very small.” Wiles wrote, adding that she focused on those who depended on her despite the doubts surrounding her effectiveness.
Wiles emphasized that working through treatment is not possible for everyone. However, for her, the job was a means to retain her identity beyond the disease.
After successful surgery, Wiles announced that recent pathology results showed no remaining cancer, marking a significant milestone in her recovery.
Wiles shared that she’d rarely written about herself but felt compelled to provide an account that might encourage others facing similar battles.
President Trump acknowledged Wiles’s strength during her treatment. Wiles expressed gratitude to him, her family, friends, and doctors for their support during her ordeal.
A message of hope was conveyed for others enduring cancer treatment. “Cancer does not have to take away who you are,” she wrote, acknowledging that her life beyond cancer includes her various roles as a leader, mother, and friend.
Her daughter, Katie Wiles, praised her mother’s strength and resilience.
