The Supreme Court has once again dismissed former President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn a jury’s decision awarding $5 million to writer E. Jean Carroll. The jury found that Trump sexually abused Carroll in a New York City department store in the 1990s and subsequently defamed her.
Trump’s legal team sought to have the justices reconsider their earlier refusal to hear his appeal, but the court denied his petition alongside several others. Although it is uncommon, the court occasionally grants such requests. Following the court’s decision in June not to hear his appeal, Trump paid the judgment.
In addition, Trump and the Justice Department have requested the high court dismiss a second Carroll verdict amounting to $83 million. They argue that Trump should not be liable for comments made about Carroll in 2019 while serving as president. The court has not yet decided on this appeal.
E. Jean Carroll, known for her work as an advice columnist and former TV talk show host, testified in the 2023 trial. She described how a friendly interaction in the 1990s escalated into a violent incident in Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury store near Trump Tower in Manhattan. The jury found Trump responsible for defamation when he denied her claim in 2022. Trump maintains his innocence.
The Associated Press identifies individuals who claim sexual assault only if they publicly disclose their identity, as Carroll has done.
