South Korea flight-tested its first domestically developed hypersonic weapon on Thursday. The weapon is designed to fly at a speed that is at least five times faster than the speed of sound. This development aims to enhance South Korea’s ability to evade missile defense systems. The successful test is seen as a critical advancement in weapon capabilities.
President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea attended the test. He emphasized that this step is essential in fortifying the country’s conventional defense capabilities. While the location of the test remains undisclosed, during the examination, the weapon separated from its booster rocket, maneuvered effectively, and successfully hit its intended target. The weapon promises to strike significant targets without prior detection within the Korean Peninsula.
Lee stressed the importance of securing security independently. He also inspected the Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile on the same day. Recent tensions between North and South Korea have been heightened following land mine explosions near the inter-Korean border, which resulted in injuries to three South Korean soldiers. North Korea has denied any involvement, although the U.S.-led United Nations Command and South Korean military suspect otherwise.
North Korea has ramped up its weapons testing, including a recent launch of a hypersonic intermediate-range missile that reportedly traveled over 1,000 kilometers. Japan and South Korea offered different flight assessments of the missile, raising concerns about tracking and intercepting capabilities.
President Lee advocates for a stronger self-reliant defense posture for South Korea while moderating rhetoric toward North Korea, despite domestic discontent following the mine incident. His approach comes amid North Korea’s expanded military nuclear program and stalled diplomatic exchanges with the U.S., which seeks denuclearization as a premise for negotiations. Tensions between the Koreas generally complicate any diplomatic progress, posing challenges for regional stability and security.
