Recent research from Spain has identified a possible connection between a chemical linked to agricultural fungicides and earlier onset of menstruation in girls. Published in Environmental Research, the study followed 506 girls from the Spanish INMA project, observing higher levels of ethylene thiourea (ETU) associated with an increased likelihood of earlier menarche.
Researchers collected urine samples from participants aged 7 to 10 and tracked their development into adolescence. ETU, related to fungicides like mancozeb, emerged as a notable factor. Girls with elevated ETU levels had a 32 to 39 percent higher chance of experiencing menarche compared to those with undetectable levels. Dietary intake, especially conventionally grown fruits and vegetables, was identified as the primary exposure route. Although modern pesticides are used in various settings, food remains the main source for the general population.
Menarche, typically occurring between ages 12 and 13, has been trending younger globally. Early puberty concerns include increased risks of metabolic, cardiovascular, mental health issues, and hormone-related cancers. The study also noted an unexpected association with TCPy, a metabolite of the insecticide chlorpyrifos, linked to later menarche compared to girls with undetectable levels.
Despite associations found, the study cannot conclusively prove causation between pesticide exposure and early puberty. Factors like potential effects on thyroid hormones and reproductive pathways are considered, but the observational nature limits definitive conclusions. Limitations include single-time point exposure estimates, given the rapid excretion of these chemicals.
Researchers emphasize the need for larger studies to validate findings and explore how combined pesticide exposures affect child development. This research marks significant prospective evidence connecting non-persistent pesticide exposure with puberty timing.
