Iranian Fans Support Soccer Team Amid Challenges in Tijuana

3 days ago 0

The Marriott in Tijuana, Mexico, is currently home to the Iranian national soccer team. The hotel perimeter is secured by barricades and monitored by police and Mexican National Guard members. Entry is restricted, requiring a hotel reservation or special permission.

Despite present challenges, including the team’s relocation from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana due to war, the atmosphere inside the hotel remains positive. Fans gather to show support for the players before their departure for the next group-stage match.

Lucas Zarrabi, a 13-year-old from Los Angeles, expressed his excitement to cheer for the team. Having already attended a match against New Zealand, he plans to watch the upcoming game versus Belgium. Fans from other U.S. cities like San Jose and Miami also traveled to Tijuana to see the team, highlighting frustrations over perceived unfair treatment by host authorities.

The Iranian soccer federation plans to file a formal complaint with FIFA, citing issues like denied U.S. visas for team officials and staff. There’s also discontent around restrictive travel conditions imposed by the U.S. government on the team.

Supporters, including Ali Eslami, visit the hotel frequently to encourage the players. Eslami, who spends time in both Southern California and Tijuana, shared his deep connection to the team despite challenges. Fans feel discouraged by protest clashes at a previous match, worried about their effects on the team’s morale.

Friendly interactions with others in the hotel, such as Chinese flight attendants and local Tijuana soccer fans, add warmth to the environment. Some supporters express gratitude for the Mexican hospitality displayed as the Iranian embassy in Mexico provides diplomatic backing.

As fans cheer and players board a bus to the airport, the event concludes with moments of camaraderie. Each player performs a personal ritual with the Quran, a meaningful gesture amid the supportive chants of “Iran, Iran!” from the attendees.
