Multiple People Trapped After Quake

In southern Japan, a strong earthquake has left many people trapped inside a mall. Local fire officials are on the scene at the partially destroyed AEON Mall. According to state broadcaster NHK, an explosion was heard on the mall’s second floor. Almost a dozen fire trucks are stationed in the parking lot, responding to the emergency. Images from the scene show the mall’s collapsed ceilings and facade, along with a debris-covered road.

Impact of the 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake

This morning, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake caused significant disruption in southwestern Japan. At JR Hakata Station in Fukuoka, passengers were crowded after the suspension of bullet train services. In Kumamoto Prefecture, fallen shelves and office equipment are visible. The exterior wall of a store in Kumamoto City has collapsed, causing further damage.

Aerial Footage Shows Building Damage

Aerial footage provided by NHK reveals that at least 12 buildings have collapsed. In four cases, people remain trapped inside. Most incidents are in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. The footage highlights a commercial facility and mall with a collapsed ceiling. Also, seven fires have been reported in the prefecture, adding to the chaos. A shrine’s supporting pillars have collapsed, and one building has caught fire.

Earthquake Details and Tsunami Advisory

The earthquake occurred in southern Japan on Tuesday, derailing a train and causing multiple injuries. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded the quake with a magnitude of 7.1 at a depth of 10 kilometers. The seismic intensity scale was marked at its highest level. At 4:27 p.m. local time, a tsunami warning covered the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas, later lifted by NHK.
