The Oklahoma City Thunder concluded the regular NBA season with an impressive 64-18 record, the best in the league. However, the San Antonio Spurs closely followed with a 62-20 record. Notably, the Spurs were the only team that consistently challenged the Thunder. They won four of five regular-season games against them, and recently, they emerged victorious in the Western Conference Finals, winning the series 4-3. The decisive Game 7 ended with a score of 111-103 in favor of the Spurs, marking their return to the NBA Finals since their championship victory in 2014. They are set to face the New York Knicks, with the series commencing on June 3.
Despite the loss, Thunder guard Cason Wallace remained unimpressed with the Spurs’ victory. In a postgame press conference, he commented, “They’re a good team. Beatable team. Obviously, we beat ’em. We just gotta do things better for a longer period of time.” This statement quickly sparked reactions online. A user questioned, “Beatable but they beat y’all [expletive] with no postseason experience,” while another quipped, “4-8 vs the Spurs this year. Enjoy Cancun.”
A fan account supporting the Spurs highlighted the team’s youthful potential, noting, “They have no idea how much better the Spurs are going to be year after year after year. [Dylan] Harper and [Carter] Bryant are only 20! [Stephon] Castle 21! Wemby 22! They have no chance in the future.”
Wallace’s confidence may not be entirely misplaced. The Thunder pushed the series to a Game 7, showcasing an evenly matched contest throughout. It remains noteworthy that the NBA has not seen consecutive championship titles since the Golden State Warriors’ wins in 2017 and 2018, making any claims of the Spurs’ dominance or the Thunder’s dynasty speculative at best.
