Miracle of Twins: A Tale of Survival and Gratitude

Sasha Sabrina Azeez learned she was having twins early in her pregnancy, a revelation that ended up saving her life.

Sasha, 31, discovered her pregnancy in April 2024, coinciding with her wedding plans with fiancé Chris. Living in Toronto, Canada, she embraced her pregnancy fully, describing it as a magical period.

The Unexpected News

During her first ultrasound, Sasha found out she was expecting twins. Yet, amidst this joy, the sonographer identified a large cyst on her ovary. Sasha expressed surprise at the cyst discovery, as she had no symptoms prior.

“I had no symptoms, so the cyst was likely there before and my pregnancy led me to discover it,” Sasha explained.

The cyst measured approximately 9 centimeters initially and grew as the pregnancy progressed. Doctors became concerned and decided surgery was necessary. By 20 weeks pregnant, the surgery presented risks to the developing twins.

A Risky Surgery

Sasha underwent surgery, resulting in the removal of her right ovary and fallopian tube. The tumor, growing to 19 centimeters, was identified as an immature teratoma—a rare, potentially cancerous tumor.

The surgery was a turning point, as Sasha faced the reality of her cancer diagnosis. Although she felt fine apart from pregnancy symptoms, the need for immediate treatment became clear.

“My oncologist warned that this was necessary if I stood any chance of watching my daughters grow up,” Sasha shared.

The twins were delivered at 29 weeks on October 4, 2024, weighing 2 pounds and 5 ounces each. Sasha underwent additional surgery for cancer tissue removal, complicating her postpartum recovery.

Recovery After Surgery

Sasha began chemotherapy by mid-October. The cycles were challenging, but she persevered, completing her final infusion at the end of December.

“It marked the end of one of the hardest chapters of my life,” Sasha remarked.

Post recovery, Sasha is now considered cancer-free. She continues regular check-ups to ensure her health remains stable.

The Miracle of Twins

The twins, initially cared for in the NICU, are developing well. Sasha and Chris affectionately refer to them as “our miracles” for revealing the cancer.

Throughout Sasha’s journey, Chris stood by her side, supporting not only her recovery but nurturing their newborn twins.

Moving forward, the couple is resuming wedding plans, embracing their newfound perspective on life.
