The autonomous vehicle sector experienced a surge of promises in 2016, with numerous companies vowing that self-driving cars would soon dominate the roads. However, many of these companies have since redirected their technology toward other industries, such as managing shipyards and city traffic.
In 2016, companies, particularly car and tech firms, invested heavily in self-driving technologies. Ford famously expected to mass-produce autonomous vehicles for the consumer market by 2021. According to Alan Hall, a former Ford communications manager, 2021 was perceived as a pivotal year for the industry.
Despite those ambitious predictions, five years after the proposed timeline, autonomous vehicles with advanced sensors remain unavailable for purchase. Robotaxis operate in limited cities, and self-driving trucks have not progressed beyond pilot projects. Some former innovators, like Luminar and Cruise, have ceased operations. Luminar declared bankruptcy last December, and General Motors closed Cruise in 2024 to focus on personal vehicles.
Yet, as the aspirations of the past decade have faded, other companies have repurposed their technology for new applications. Radar technologies, including ground-penetrating radar, 3-D radar, and lidar, are now utilized in different contexts. These technologies assist in smart city systems, in-home elder care services, managing heavy equipment at shipyards, and monitoring tall wind turbines. They also contribute to advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence.
Lidar technology, which stands for light detection and ranging, has gained widespread use. Lidar sensors capture three-dimensional images by emitting near-infrared light and measuring its reflection off surfaces. This capability is invaluable for traffic monitoring systems, especially where standard video cameras struggle with challenging lighting conditions, like intense daylight or total darkness.
