Serena Williams Returns to Wimbledon as a Wild Card

Serena Williams will make an unexpected return to tennis at Wimbledon, capturing attention not only from fans but from herself. During her first Wimbledon press conference, Williams expressed surprise at her own decision, stating, When I evolved, I never thought I’d come back.

Since her last appearance at the 2022 US Open, the 23-time Grand Slam singles winner engaged in competitive play alongside Victoria Mboko in doubles at the HSBC Championships on June 9. She also partnered with Karolina Muchova in the Berlin Tennis Open the following week. Now, at the age of 44, Williams will make a singles comeback at Wimbledon by utilizing a wild card entry.

Williams revealed during the press conference, I had until Monday to decide. I think it was, like, Sunday because I just wasn’t sure up until then. Honestly, I’m still not even sure, but we’ll see. The uncertainty reflects her inner struggle in making this decision.

Williams admitted she frequently encounters nervousness before matches, describing the experience as a testament to her passion and dedication to tennis. She noted, I expect to be nervous… whether it was the first round or the second round or the finals, I’ve always had some nerves. But then I just dust ’em off, then I move on.

Contemplating whether to accept the wild card, Williams shared that she had to motivate herself, saying What’s wrong with me, Serena? What are you thinking? Are you nuts? Ultimately, the opportunity was too significant to overlook.

Williams, seven-time Wimbledon singles champion with her latest victory in 2016, will confront Maya Joint from Australia, 20, on Tuesday, June 30. In addition, she will compete in doubles with her sister, Venus Williams, 46. The sisters boast 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together, including six achieved at Wimbledon.
