Mayor Mamdani’s Approach to 9/11 Memorial Service and City Safety

This year’s 9/11 memorial service marks Zohran Mamdani’s first as the mayor of New York City. He regards it as an ‘enormous responsibility’ during a somber time, focusing on honoring those who died, rather than engaging in politics.

Mamdani stated, ‘It’s about those killed that day. It’s about their families. It’s about the lives that have been shattered. When you see the museum’s portraits, you see the essence of New York. Anniversaries offer an opportunity to recognize and remember those individuals.’

Commemorating 25 years since the attacks, Mamdani aims for September 11, 2026, to be a day of solemn remembrance. He expressed, ‘We gather as New Yorkers, united by love for the city they sought to protect. Our responsibility is to never forget and to honor the courage shown on that day.’

With thousands still suffering from 9/11-related illnesses, there is pressure to release attack-related documents. Mamdani agreed, ‘If documents can be released, they should be.’ A planned public online portal for 9/11 documents gets $34.2 million in the 2027 city budget.

Reflecting on September 11, 2001, significant communication issues troubled the FDNY and NYPD. Mamdani stated, ‘Our emergency personnel need the best equipment. We need federal, state, and local alignment. Ensuring those who run towards danger have top equipment is crucial.’

After the attacks, ex-NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly initiated a program involving informants in certain settings. When asked about expanding city surveillance, Mamdani emphasized, ‘We can ensure safety while respecting citizens’ rights. Past efforts painted people as suspicious based only on religion or faith, which is unacceptable. The NYPD respects these rights while maintaining safety.’

Given New York City’s status as the nation’s top terror target, Mamdani was questioned about his response to credible attack information. He stated, ‘I would consult with my police commissioner and top officials to understand the threat, prevent it from materializing, and ensure the safety of New Yorkers.’
