Days before confirming her return to tennis, Serena Williams showed interest in partnering Coco Gauff for doubles. Coco Gauff, during the Roland-Garros event, expressed enthusiasm about the idea. At 22, she mentioned, “That would be really cool. I did say one of my biggest regrets was not being able to play her.” Gauff acknowledged the circulating rumors, adding, “If they are true, I guess we’ll find out in a couple of days.” For Gauff, seeing a legend back in action is exciting for the sport.
Williams, 44, prefers playing doubles with Gauff instead of competing against her in singles. “I would really love to play with Coco,” Williams conveyed after a match with Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Tennis Open. She acknowledged Coco and Karolina as admirable players. “I love watching Coco as well. Now that I know that — and she’s so focused on singles nowadays. I guess I should have asked, though. I didn’t know,” Williams added.
Serena Williams made her return to professional tennis at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club in London on June 9. She played doubles with 19-year-old Victoria Mboko, and they won in the Round of 16. However, an injury to Mboko cut their run short. Next, Williams turned her focus to Berlin, and it was announced that she and her sister, Venus Williams, will compete in doubles at Wimbledon.
Williams’s record is impressive. She holds 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any woman in the Open Era. Additionally, she and Venus have claimed 14 doubles titles together, including six victories at Wimbledon.
