Sen. Cory Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, criticized President Donald Trump’s new memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran. Booker labeled the agreement as an ‘abject surrender’ and stated that Trump appears as the ‘biggest loser’ in international diplomacy for ending the conflict with Tehran.
Booker contended that Trump deserved no praise for attempting to terminate a conflict that Democrats believe he mishandled from inception. During an appearance on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press,’ Booker remarked that both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were unsuccessful leaders disrupting pathways to peace in the Middle East. He expressed a desire for both leaders to exit the global stage.
The Democratic Senator emphasized his record of voting eight times to end the war. He criticized the memorandum for benefitting Iran while diminishing the United States’ strategic options. ‘I do not support this deal,’ Booker stated, characterizing it as a substantial concession.
Booker argued that American resources appear poised to aid in Iran’s reconstruction, thus undermining U.S. leverage in negotiations. He claims Trump’s approach did not meet its original objectives and brought criticism from global allies who view the U.S. president as a risk to global stability.
Democratic strategist James Carville suggested Trump deserved some recognition for ending the war instead of choosing escalation. However, Booker rebuffed this notion, likening it to crediting an arsonist for fleeing a blaze they ignited.
Booker then directed his critique towards Congress, particularly Republicans, for enabling Trump’s wartime policies without adequate opposition.
In response, White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales defended the administration’s achievements, crediting the MOU with improving energy prices and curtailing Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
