Security Concerns Surround Mexico-England FIFA World Cup Match

The upcoming FIFA World Cup match between Mexico and England has raised significant security concerns in both the host nation and California. Authorities are implementing measures to manage crowd safety, while some venues in California have canceled watch parties due to fears of violence and overcrowding.

Security Measures in Mexico

The English team, known as The Three Lions, will play at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Sunday at 6 p.m. local time (8 p.m. ET). Their aim is to thwart Mexico’s progress to the quarter-finals. Notably, Estadio Azteca, renamed Estadio Ciudad de Mexico for the tournament, last hosted England during the infamous 1986 World Cup match with Argentina, marked by Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal.

Local authorities are taking precautions after a recent tragic incident where four individuals died following celebrations of Mexico’s win against Ecuador. More than a million celebrants filled the streets, resulting in the accidental deaths of two men and two women due to suffocation and other health complications.

To prevent such incidents, a security perimeter will be set up along Reforma Avenue, a popular gathering spot for fans. Access to this area will be controlled once it reaches capacity, as announced by Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada. Moreover, some metro stations will be closed, and public transportation services reduced. Streets in certain areas will be reserved for pedestrians to ensure the safety of football fans.

President Claudia Sheinbaum advised fans to avoid overcrowded areas and excessive alcohol consumption, stressing that such behavior often leads to violence during celebrations.

Safety Efforts for the England Team

Extensive security measures are in place for the England team. Over 100 riot police are stationed at the team’s hotel, with thousands more deployed at the stadium for the match.

Canceled Watch Parties in California

Several California venues, including Universal Studios Hollywood, have canceled World Cup watch parties. The decision followed concerns about potential overcrowding and violence. Prior events were described as ‘super packed’ and difficult to manage. Universal Studios stopped hosting watch parties at City Walk, affecting the entire tournament’s schedule.

In San Francisco, SPARK Social SF also canceled its watch parties after a shooting near its Mission Bay site during the Mexico-Ecuador match. The incident involved a gunman who fled, leaving two people hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

Late Night Football in the United Kingdom

In the UK, where the match starts at 1 a.m. local time, pubs will remain open until 5 a.m. for this event. This decision by the government came to support fan participation. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced his resignation, emphasized the importance of community gatherings and team support.

However, the National Police Chiefs’ Council criticized the late decision, as it requires officers to work extra hours. They noted that knockout matches often see increased violence linked to alcohol consumption, with a rise in domestic abuse incidents.

The council urged fans to drink responsibly and behave safely to ensure a positive and secure environment for everyone involved.
