Justice Barrett Faces Criticism from the Right for Recent Votes

1 month ago 0

Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett has recently faced criticism from right-wing commentators. This follows her votes with liberal justices in several significant cases this year.

This week, Justice Barrett opposed efforts by the Trump administration, including the attempt to end birthright citizenship. She joined Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and the liberal minority in rejecting efforts to restrict mail-in voting, a practice blamed by some without evidence for Trump’s 2020 defeat.

Republican officials and pundits criticized Justice Barrett, accusing her of betraying the party and former President Trump. An analysis from the previous year showed she was often in the majority for decisions with liberal outcomes, though this was not the case in the current term. She also played a role in blocking tariffs imposed by Trump.

Right-wing commentator Matt Walsh went on social media to express disapproval, comparing Justice Barrett to Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and questioning Republican presidents’ track records on Supreme Court appointments. Representative Nancy Mace from South Carolina called for Justice Barrett’s removal from the bench, though the impeachment process makes this unlikely without sufficient votes in the Senate.
