In Laos, heavy rains have threatened to delay the ongoing search for two individuals missing in a flooded cave. This comes after the successful rescue of five other people who were trapped underground for over a week. Finnish diver Mikko Paasi, one of the first international rescuers to reach the site, indicated that the rainfall raised the water level to the second chamber. This has prevented divers from entering until water pumps can lower the level.
The seven individuals reportedly entered the cave last week to search for valuable minerals but became trapped by a flash flood. Only one person managed to escape and alert authorities. Rescue teams from Laos and neighboring Thailand have collaborated over the past week at the site. The rescue operations are taking place in a rugged area in Xaisomboun province, located about 120 kilometers north of Vientiane. This effort is joined by divers from various countries, including Finland, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, France, and Australia.
Several rescuers were involved in the complex 2018 rescue in northern Thailand, where 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach were saved from a flooded cave. The rescued individuals in the current operation are receiving treatment at a local hospital and are reportedly doing well, according to Malaysian diver Lee Kian Lie.
Efforts continue to locate the remaining two Lao nationals as divers explore the cave system. The team has made progress by navigating over 200 meters into the cave and discovering five chambers. The rescued group was found in the fifth chamber. Paasi shared a belief that a narrow crack in the fifth chamber might lead to a yet undiscovered sixth chamber. This theory fuels hope that the missing individuals could be located if divers can penetrate the small restriction.
The first individual among the rescued group was evacuated safely on Friday. This person was guided through a narrow flooded passage by an expert diver. The other four exited the cave on Saturday after the water level receded sufficiently for them to walk out. Videos shared online captured emotional moments as the rescued individuals emerged from the cave. Upon exiting, some collapsed from exhaustion, while others were immediately supported by jubilant workers. These moments were followed by medical care, where the rescued individuals were wrapped in foil blankets and fitted with oxygen masks before being transported for further treatment.
