Sean McVay, the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, deeply dislikes losing, despite having experienced it infrequently since taking the job before the 2017 season. Entering his tenth year as the team’s head coach, McVay has encountered just one losing season.
Following the 2022 season, McVay contemplated stepping away from football to explore media opportunities. This consideration came after the team’s 5-12 performance a year after winning Super Bowl LVI by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals.
In a recent ’60 Minutes’ interview, McVay shared that he found himself in a “dark” place, needing to accept that a few losses did not define him. His wife, Veronika Khomyn, provided a crucial reality check, challenging the narrative he was creating for himself.
McVay recalled discussing the daunting 2023 season with his wife, expressing thoughts of taking a year off. Khomyn reminded him that such an action would not align with the leader he aspired to be. McVay admitted it would have been quitting due to his inability to cope with losses.
After the challenging 2022 season, McVay led the Rams to successive 10-7 seasons, followed by a 12-5 season in 2025, reaching the NFC Championship. Although they lost to the Seattle Seahawks, the team achieved significant success.
McVay remains with the Rams, aiming for Super Bowl contention. The team bolstered its roster by acquiring Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns and coaxing Aaron Donald out of retirement.
The Rams began the 2026 season with a loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Australia but plan to regroup for their Week 2 home game against the New York Giants.
