Screen Time Impact on Child Development

1 week ago 0

Top federal health officials are raising alarms about the effects of excessive screen time on children’s development. Dr. Stephanie Haridopolos, interim surgeon general, warns that early and heavy use of screens can lead to significant neurocognitive delays in young children, affecting attention spans, memory, and language skills.

Concerns Over Screen Time

Parents are in a struggle for their children’s attention against screens, according to Haridopolos. She talks about the impact of high screen exposure on early brain development, pointing out the potential delays in cognitive functions like attention, memory, and speech.

Combatting Screen Addiction

The U.S. Surgeon General’s Office has introduced a framework called “the 5 Ds” to help parents address screen addiction effectively.

1. Discuss

Families should establish clear screen time boundaries before conflicts occur. Sitting down to create age-appropriate rules about when, where, and how long screens can be used daily prevents frequent arguments.

2. Do (Model Behavior)

Haridopolos stresses the importance of parents modeling healthy screen habits. She advises adults to lead by example, suggesting that consistent screen use by parents might encourage similar behavior in children.

3. Divert

When children are bored, instead of reaching for a tablet, parents should direct them toward engaging activities such as arts and crafts or cooking a healthy meal together.

4. Disconnect

Utilize breaks like summer and holidays to reset digital boundaries. Haridopolos suggests integrating regular screen-free times into daily routines, including meals, car rides, and bedtime. Avoid scrolling during meals to prevent increased caloric intake and consumption of processed foods.

5. Delay

Delay children’s access to screens by charging phones and devices outside bedrooms, such as in common spaces like the kitchen or living room.

Implementing these activities can lead to substantial positive changes, according to Haridopolos. Khloe Quill, a lifestyle writer for Fox News Digital, covers topics including health and travel.
