Scott Hanson Discusses NFL Penalties and Officiating

1 hour ago 0

Millions of NFL fans spend their Sundays with Scott Hanson, the host of “NFL RedZone.” Hanson is familiar with the intricacies of the game, especially when it comes to penalties. An ESPN Insights report revealed that NFL officials had called more penalties through Week 4 of the season than any other since 1978. Additionally, 17 touchdowns were nullified compared to five at the same point last season.

“I believe the NFL just put out a statement about penalties. I don’t know when people are going to watch this [we recorded on Friday, October 9], but as we are talking right here, the NFL says that penalties per game are actually down this year,” Hanson said.

Hanson addressed this issue in a recent interview with OutKick. He mentioned that NFL penalties have been a topic of discussion and controversy.

Hanson expressed respect for NFL professionals, noting, “I really believe that NFL football is the best officiated of the major four sports.” While some argue that too many flags are thrown, Hanson believes accuracy is more important than the number of penalties. Mistakes happen due to the limitations of the human eye and judgment errors.

OutKick’s perspective suggests the NFL reduces minor penalties in the postseason to avoid slowing down the game. However, Hanson questions this view. He believes that in standalone playoff games, every call is magnified, creating a narrative of different officiating standards.

He stated, “You’re not getting a playoff game if you aren’t great.” He also supports the idea of making officials’ performance grades public to enhance fan understanding.

Beyond officiating, Hanson engaged in a respectful debate about the Historical Jesus during the interview. To explore more on these topics, you can watch the interview on YouTube.
