The San Francisco 49ers remain unbeaten, but the journey has been costly. Star wide receiver Mike Evans is struggling with an Achilles issue.
During their 23-17 win over the Washington Commanders, Evans left early due to Achilles tendinitis. Head coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that this had affected Evans even in practice sessions before their Week 6 game.
Shanahan stated, “It’s something that’s bothered him before, and something that has bothered him throughout the week. When you have Achilles tendinitis like he does, it flares up. I hope he recovers throughout the week.”
He clarified that the injury isn’t seen as long-term and additional scans on Evans’ tendon aren’t expected.
Evans missed practice the entire week, making the decision to play him a difficult one. He reassured Shanahan, drawing from his previous experiences handling similar issues.
“That was the confidence he gave me, but we knew he might not be able to last,” said Shanahan.
Evans accumulated 94 yards on three catches, but his night ended after a 16-yard reception just before halftime.
Without Evans, the 49ers’ offense struggled. After halftime, they managed only 72 yards and three points, facing three consecutive three-and-out drives in the fourth quarter.
The remaining wide receivers, Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing, and Malik Turner, combined for just 35 yards on two receptions.
The team also dealt with other injuries: linebacker Luke Gifford suffered a groin injury and cornerback Upton Stout injured his shoulder.
Shanahan remains hopeful that Evans can play against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7. But he noted, “we’ll have to have the rest of the group step up” if Evans isn’t ready.
Christian Kirk, who has participated in two practices, might play in the upcoming game. Shanahan doesn’t expect Demarcus Robinson or Deebo Samuel Sr. to return before the team’s Week 8 bye.
