Safe Evacuation of Villagers Trapped in Laos Cave

In Laos, rescue workers achieved the safe evacuation of four villagers trapped in a flooded cave for ten days. The operation took place on Saturday, following the successful extraction of another villager the previous day. Unfortunately, two men remain unaccounted for.

Both Lao and Thai rescue teams shared updates and images on social media. Photos depicted the rescued individuals on stretchers, equipped with oxygen masks and insulated with foil blankets.

The villagers had entered the cave seeking valuable minerals when sudden flooding trapped them. One villager managed to escape and notify authorities about the group left behind. The organization, Rescue Volunteer for People, confirmed that receding water levels enabled an evacuation with the aid of divers delivering sustenance.

A video by Thai rescuer Chakkit Taengtang showcased the gradual assistance provided to each trapped individual. Upon emerging, some were overtaken by exhaustion and embraced by relieved rescuers.

The first villager of the group was freed on Friday. Footage captured his emergence alongside a diver, as he navigated a narrow, submerged passage before standing. Identified by their first names, those rescued included Khamla, Mued, Ee, Ing, and Laen.

The operation involved rescue teams from Laos and Thailand, alongside experts from Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, France, and Australia. Many had previous experience in the 2018 Thai cave rescue of young soccer players and their coach.

Rescue efforts continue for the two missing individuals. Kengkaj Bongkawong, leader of the Thai Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin team, stated plans to search deeper sections of the cave. Nevertheless, he warned that these areas remain heavily flooded.
