The race for the Republican nomination for governor of Oklahoma heads into a runoff, with State Attorney General Gentner Drummond and former State Senator Mike Mazzei leading the field. According to NBC News projections, neither candidate secured a majority in the primary, prompting a runoff between the two contenders.
Nine Republican candidates participated, but Drummond and Mazzei stood out by each securing roughly 25% of the vote. Drummond has previous statewide electoral success, while Mazzei received a recent endorsement from President Donald Trump. Trump’s endorsement highlighted Mazzei as a committed advocate for the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.
Current Governor Kevin Stitt, who won elections in 2018 and 2022, faces term limits and is ineligible to run again. Mazzei’s campaign benefits from substantial personal financing, with nearly $7 million of a total $11 million raised coming from his own funds. Drummond, contrastingly, began his campaign with a $2 million loan and later increased his funding with additional loans and contributions mostly from individuals.
Mazzei, previously a financial planner, outlined his platform focusing on eliminating state income taxes, enhancing property tax relief for seniors and veterans, and launching a literacy initiative for the state. Drummond, currently Attorney General, gained attention for his legal actions, notably suing to halt a proposed $4 billion aluminum smelter, citing environmental concerns. He has also opposed integrating religious content into public education.
Oklahoma’s political landscape remains staunchly Republican, with Donald Trump carrying every county in the state for three consecutive presidential elections since 1968. The outcome of this gubernatorial race will further define the Republican leadership in this reliably conservative state.
