Rock the Block: A Celebration of Community in Lake Zurich

Clear skies and warm temperatures set the stage for the 13th annual Rock the Block event in downtown Lake Zurich, held on September 12. The free event ran from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., featuring three live bands performing for music enthusiasts. The evening began with The Ron Burgundy’s performing yacht rock tunes, followed by Libido Funk Circus with pop hits, and concluded with 7th Heaven, a rock band that rounded off the festivities.

Food trucks lined Main Street along with vendors in booths offering various goods. A large bar area sold adult beverages, complemented by high tables and a big screen television setup. Much of the service was managed by an enthusiastic team of volunteers.

Lake Zurich Mayor Tom Poynton expressed satisfaction with the event, estimating an attendance of around 8,000 people. The weather, marked by refreshing breezes, added to the enjoyment during one of the last pleasant evenings of the summer. Mayor Poynton initiated Rock the Block as a community-building event when he was first elected in 2013, intending to draw residents to the Main Street area.

“That’s the reason why we did this in the first place—to do something for the community. Really, what the main reason was, to bring people down here to our Main Street area. We spent a lot of money doing the streetscape on Main Street.”

Poynton reflected on the improvements made to downtown, which helped transform the area into a vibrant setting capable of safely hosting large crowds. He acknowledged the indispensable role of volunteers, stating, “We wouldn’t get this on without the volunteers.” Approximately 100 volunteers contributed their time and efforts to make the event a success.

Visitors had access to a variety of complimentary and paid amenities. Julie Austin, a former Lake Zurich resident, enjoyed a photo opportunity at a designated station, sporting bright red sunglasses. Having grown up in Lake Zurich, Austin attends the event annually to reconnect with her roots.

Matt Mazur from Prospect Heights attended with his family, including his young son. Many attendees appreciated the family-friendly atmosphere and the chance to gather with the community. Local families, such as the Joneja family from Vernon Hills, enjoyed the music, food, and friendly company.

Several families shared picnic tables, enjoying food truck offerings like flavored ice and barbecue pulled pork. Emily Dillingham, a local resident, praised the event for its positive impact on the community. Arbin Shrestha expressed gratitude for the volunteers’ hard work, stating, “We appreciate them.”

The sense of community and collaboration was evident throughout the evening, highlighting the success of Rock the Block as a cherished tradition in Lake Zurich.
