Rhode Island GOP Primary Highlights Key Issues and Candidates

Attorney Matt Belinsky and Brianna Lyman from The Federalist recently discussed a report from Axios on the Democratic midterm campaign strategies. During the panel, they also addressed Steve Hilton’s remarks on Joe Rogan’s podcast about Los Angeles’ economic challenges under Democratic policies.

Two candidates, Elaine Pelino and Aaron Guckian, compete in a close GOP primary in a traditionally Democratic state. Pelino, a former NFL cheerleader and publisher, presents herself as the party-line option. In contrast, Guckian, a former aide to ex-Governor Donald Carcieri, offers a more centrist approach. By early Thursday morning, the race remained too tight to call.

The focus of the primary lies on experience and qualifications. Republicans aim to present a candidate capable of appealing to the predominantly Democratic voter base. The previous election saw Democratic Governor Daniel McKee defeat Republican Ashley Kalus with 57.9% to 38.9% of the votes.

Pelino emphasized priorities such as merit-based hiring, supporting law enforcement, immigration law, and school choice. “This is what I’m going to do. I’m learning. Everything is a learning curve because I’m not a lifetime politician,” she noted at a candidate forum.

Pelino’s background spans modeling, media, and cheering for the Houston Oilers before her ventures in politics where she founded Tigress magazine in 2011.

Guckian opts for a policy-focused campaign, advocating for changes to Rhode Island’s permitting and efficient allocation of state revenue. “The state budget increased from $9.3 billion in 2019 to more than $14 billion between 2024 and 2026, with a nearly 50% increase in five years,” Guckian stated on his campaign website.

As the candidates prepare for the November 3 general election, they face the challenge of winning over voters in a state with a strong Democratic leaning.
