Republicans to Host Unprecedented National Convention Ahead of Midterms

President Donald Trump announced that Republicans will hold their first-ever national convention before the upcoming midterm elections, aiming to boost voter turnout in races critical to maintaining control of Congress. The convention will take place in Dallas on September 9 and 10.

While major parties usually hold large conventions during presidential campaigns, Trump has suggested organizing a similar event this year to focus attention on both House and Senate races. If Democrats win control of either chamber, they can block Trump’s agenda and initiate investigations into his administration during the remaining two years of his term.

Republicans hold narrow majorities in Congress and historically lose ground during midterms. Without Trump on the ballot, Republican leaders worry about energizing their voters. Trump hopes the convention will change this and has discussed it since last year, emphasizing in a social media post that Republicans will use the event to highlight accomplishments since the 2024 Presidential Election.

“We will also have lots of Great Entertainment — It will be a RALLY like none other!” Trump stated on Truth Social, announcing the convention details.

The Democratic National Committee considered hosting a similar convention but ultimately decided against it due to concerns about finances. DNC’s fundraising efforts have been weak, compounded by millions in debt. Democrats believe the GOP convention could allow them to associate Republican candidates with Trump’s low approval ratings.

Hosting the convention in Texas draws attention to the state’s Senate race between Democratic nominee James Talarico and Republican nominee Ken Paxton. Paxton, backed by Trump, defeated Senator John Cornyn in a primary earlier this year. Republican leaders worry that Paxton’s scandals — including an affair, impeachment, and a securities fraud case — might hurt his chances, potentially draining party resources in a race they should win.

The convention also reflects Trump’s redistricting efforts beginning mid-decade in Texas, aiming to secure more seats for Republicans in the fall elections. The Republican National Committee has been preparing for this event and amended procedures concerning quadrennial presidential nominating conventions at its winter meeting in January.
