Flash Floods in Nepal: Rescue Efforts and Casualty Reports

At least 18 people lost their lives and over 380 remain missing following flash floods in northern Nepal, authorities reported. The floods, which impacted the Himalayan nation’s border areas, involved 291 missing foreigners, including three U.S. citizens, as noted by Nepal’s Tourism Board based on tour companies’ information.

The floods destroyed villages and essential infrastructure, including houses, roads, and power plants. Regional media videos showed torrents of water demolishing bridges and buildings. Police confirmed 18 casualties, but the victims’ nationalities are still unverified.

The Bhote Koshi River experienced a sudden water surge on Wednesday, affecting Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts. Nepali President Ramachandra Paudel expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy and called for intensified rescue and relief actions from government entities and the public.

District administrator Narendra Pariyar cautioned about potential further casualties and urged riverside residents to seek higher ground. The challenging geography of Nepal, with its deep valleys, complicates rescue operations. Helicopter access is limited in areas like Syapru Besi and Timure.

According to authorities, the missing foreigners include 12 British, 142 Indian, 17 Malaysian nationals, among others. Most were traveling with tourism companies. The flash flood was linked to an earthquake-induced landslide that blocked the Bhote Koshi River.

The Nepal Electricity Authority reported damage to six major hydropower and transmission facilities. Police have warned riverside residents to move and have mobilized all available resources. Emergency measures are underway in collaboration with medical teams, scouts, and the Red Cross.

India’s authorities have also heightened alert levels in border states.
