DALLAS — Significant pressure is on President Donald Trump and the Republicans with the midterm elections approaching. With early voting only weeks away, the GOP is set to descend on Texas starting Wednesday for their first-ever midterm convention, aiming to maintain control of Congress.
The GOP’s strategy involves energizing their base and increasing voter turnout in key states to secure their slim House and Senate majorities. Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters highlighted the plan to effectively put President Trump at the center of the midterm elections during a Fox News Digital interview.
PRESIDENT TRUMP TO SPEAK AT GOP MIDTERM CONVENTION
President Trump is scheduled to deliver speeches on both nights of the convention, starting Wednesday in Dallas. The focus is to showcase Republican accomplishments since his return to the White House.
The GOP faces a challenge with low voter turnout among MAGA supporters in non-presidential election years, seeking to overcome this by organizing what some call a “Trumpapalooza.” Gruters praised Trump as a strong vote-getter, aiming to mobilize low-propensity voters.
Trump’s keynote address is set for Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET. He will return Thursday night to close the event, following Vice President JD Vance’s keynote speech.
Historically, the party in power tends to lose seats during midterm elections. This trend coincides with current issues like inflation at grocery stores and high gas prices linked to an unpopular conflict with Iran, alongside Trump’s unfavorable approval ratings.
Gruters stated the need for innovative strategies to counter historical trends, explaining the party’s decision to hold the convention.
DEMOCRATS RESPOND
Democrats, meanwhile, intend to reclaim congressional power. Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin predicted success at the party’s summer meeting. Despite being in debt and opting out of a similar convention, the DNC sees the GOP event as a chance for critique.
Martin criticized the GOP for hosting a “multi-million dollar party” amid economic struggles for working families, asserting Democrats are focused on practical solutions like reducing costs and improving healthcare.
The Democrats have highlighted fewer Republicans attending the Dallas convention, while Gruters noted the participation of candidates from competitive races who understand the importance of messaging.
CONTRASTING IDEALS
Republicans aim to contrast their policies with Democrats by emphasizing a leftward shift in Democratic primaries. Gruters claimed that convention speakers will appeal to Americans for sensible governance rather than radical changes proposed by elected Democrats.
The convention also intends to highlight Trump’s achievements in his second term, such as tax cuts and trade policies, designed to benefit American workers over time.
The RNC holds a significant cash advantage over the DNC into the convention. Gruters reported funds raised and saved to bolster voter turnout and clarify candidate positions.
