Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, expressed support for a short-term agreement with Iran. This follows President Donald Trump’s announcement that a deal with Tehran had ‘largely been negotiated’. Massie argued that Americans are already experiencing economic challenges due to the conflict.
During his appearance on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’, Massie confirmed his support when asked about a potential Iran deal. ‘Heck yes, I would support it!’ he stated. Although details of the deal remain unknown, Massie implied it has potential, noting interest from other prominent senators.
Massie, a known critic of U.S. military interventions, linked his support to increasing domestic costs for fuel and farming. He noted that constituents in Kentucky are hurting from rising gas and diesel prices, making it difficult for farmers to afford essential supplies like fertilizer.
Despite losing his Republican primary after seven terms in Congress, Massie stood by his independent approach in Washington. ‘Since the day I got to Washington D.C., I’ve been doing this job like I thought people wanted you to do it,’ said Massie, emphasizing his focus on constituents over party allegiance.
Massie’s willingness to partner across party lines, such as with Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna on various legislative efforts, has occasionally placed him at odds with traditional party factions. Following his primary defeat, Massie defended this cross-party cooperation, suggesting it made him a target.
Massie also noted the significant financial influence in his recent campaign, stating, ‘They couldn’t buy my vote in 14 years, so they bought this seat.’ His race was reported as the most expensive in congressional primary history.
He warned that Republicans might face political repercussions in the upcoming midterms, citing alienation within parts of Trump’s coalition. Specifically, he pointed to dissatisfaction among anti-war voters and fiscal conservatives.
Critical of GOP leadership, Massie voiced concerns over spending practices, including projects endorsed by Trump like the proposed White House ballroom. He described them as ‘egregious waste’, urging focus on economic priorities over federal spending and foreign engagements.
Trump mentioned on Truth Social that an Iran agreement had ‘largely been negotiated’; however, details remained unavailable as of Sunday morning. Fox News Digital sought comments from senators Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham, though no responses were received.
