Manny Fernandez, a prominent figure in the NFL during his time, passed away on May 24 at the age of 79. The Miami Dolphins announced his death, mourning the loss of one of their most influential players. Fernandez was a critical part of the Dolphins’ success, particularly during their undefeated 1972 season.

Throughout his eight-year career, from 1968 to 1975, Fernandez played exclusively with the Dolphins. Under the leadership of coach Don Shula, he contributed significantly to their victories in Super Bowl VII and VIII. Notably, in Super Bowl VII, Fernandez recorded two sacks, aiding the team in achieving the first perfect season in NFL history with a 17-0 record.

‘We are deeply saddened by the passing of Manny Fernandez, a member of the 1972 Perfect Team, a two-time Super Bowl champion, Ring of Honor member, and an anchor of the Dolphins’ legendary No-Name Defense,’ stated the Dolphins. ‘His consistent and selfless contributions on the field were instrumental to the Dolphins’ success throughout the early 1970s, particularly in the team’s three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, in which he produced some of the most memorable defensive performances in the history of the game. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and teammates as we remember one of the best players in Dolphins history.’

Fernandez was born in San Lorenzo, California. Before signing with the Dolphins, he was an undrafted free agent from the University of Utah in 1968. In a 2006 interview, he reflected on his early years: ‘When I was at San Lorenzo High School, I didn’t really have a lot of self-confidence. I dreamed of being a Raider, but figured I’d be a Longshoreman. I never really looked beyond tomorrow.’ Despite these humble beginnings, Fernandez became an All-Pro by his third season with Miami and his name even appeared on an MVP ballot in 1970.

Primarily playing as a defensive tackle, Fernandez achieved 35 sacks and six fumble recoveries in 103 regular-season games, along with 4.5 sacks in 10 postseason games. In Super Bowl VII, Fernandez was credited with an impressive 17 tackles, showcasing his formidable skills on the field.

After retiring, Fernandez relocated to Georgia and pursued a career in the insurance industry. His achievements and dedication to the game were recognized in December 2014 when he was inducted into the Dolphins’ Ring of Honor. Fernandez’s legacy continues to inspire both fans and players, leaving a lasting impact on the Dolphins and the NFL.
