U.S. Eases Travel Restrictions for Iran’s World Cup Team

1 hour ago 0

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Tuesday that the Iranian World Cup team would be allowed to enter the country two days before its next match. The team is set to leave after playing in Seattle on Friday. This update follows complaints from the Iran squad regarding travel challenges since the outbreak of war.

Iran’s request to move its base camp from Tucson, Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico was approved two weeks prior. However, several team officials and support staff faced travel restrictions to the U.S. For the initial matches near Los Angeles, the team was only permitted to travel the day before, which led to concerns about inadequate recovery time stated by Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei.

FIFA regulations dictate that teams travel to the match venue the day before their game, but Iran requested extra time to acclimate and recover, especially for the lengthy trip to Seattle. Captain Alireza Jahanbakhsh emphasized the need for equal procedures as other teams. The squad also faced delays on flights between Tijuana and Los Angeles.

The travel issues highlighted concerns after U.S. officials alleged attempts to smuggle members linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Iran’s soccer federation has refuted these claims. While players avoided political discussions, they subtly referenced a missile attack on a school with significant casualties.

Iran’s upcoming schedule includes training at the University of Washington. Meanwhile, Egypt, another team requesting early arrival in Seattle, faced rejection from FIFA due to security resource constraints.

This situation underscores ongoing diplomatic tensions affecting sports events. Both teams continue advocacy for peaceful resolutions amid global conflicts.
